Guitar-song: dialogues between the solo guitar and the popular song in Brazil

The book presents the results collected by the author in musical encounters dedicated to the intersection between the universe of the solo guitar and the universe of the popular song.

With the book Guitar-Song: dialogues between the solo guitar and the popular song in Brazil, musician Chico Saraiva brings to the public his research about the guitar as a soloist instrument connected to the written tradition, and as a song accompanier in the Brazilian musical tradition. The development of the study is based on his seven interviews with masters of our music: João Bosco, Paulo César Pinheiro, and Luiz Tatit, as popular song representatives; Paulo Bellinati, Sérgio Assad, and Marco Pereira, representing the concert solo guitar; Guinga and Elomar as members of both traditions.

Along the conversation, Saraiva and the interviewees play songs that are indicated in the book and whose videos can be watched on the video-site (www.violao-cancao.com ).

The text organized by themes inspired in the idea of a movie setup, evolves round the creation process, the exchanges between lyric, melody, and harmony, execution aspects, relation between instruments and the popular and erudite guitar.

Thesis advisor of the master course dissertation from which the book is originated, conductor and professor Gil Jardim signs the text on the back cover: “Here is the most fascinating characteristic of this book: in involving and accessible discourse, to bring intimacies of the music creation act reported by several experts in the Brazilian music.”

The e-book version may be found in virtual bookstores such as: Sesc São Paulo web portal, Amazon, Livraria Cultura, Livraria Saraiva, Kobo and Apple Store.
